What is the world coming to?

Okay, this post is about convenience food and our new (heavy) reliance on it. I'm not saying it's always a bad thing, convenience food can be fantastic, but at the very least lets all understand the difference between convenience and good old proper cooking.... This happened a long time ago but I was thinking about it today, and how it really illustrates our culture today with respect to foods and cooking and eating... so I will share it to you. It was so shocking to me that I still get irate when it comes to mind. I'm in line at the grocery store, and a woman is in front of me (she's probably in her 40s...ish?). She has a box of Betty Crocker cake mix. The cashier scans it and says "WOW!!!! I can't believe you use this! You bake from scratch!!!????". Now ridiculous as that comment is, it gets better. The WOMAN responds: "yes, I do!!!! This mix is SO much better than storebought!" or something to that effect. Here's me with my mouth hanging open. When I bake a cake FROM SCRATCH - and I don't mean hey Ma look I bought a cake mix - but when I actually break out the flour and butter and eggs and recipes and slave over a cake, and someone asks "is this from scratch" and I say "yes it is," does everybody think I went to Sobeys and picked up a cake mix and threw it in the oven? Use cake mixes, by all means, and know that I certainly have used my fair share and see nothing wrong with it (besides the additives), but do we really need to say that that is the new "baking from scratch"??????? Thoughts anyone? Am I going crazy over nothing? Yes I know the timing of this post is odd, I watched the kids so B could watch conference and will be catching up during the week....

OH MY WORD!!!! That is so funny! I don't think I get mad over it, but I find it hilarious that "baking from scratch" means using a cake mix! To be honest, I don't think I've EVER baked a cake really from scratch...that is now on my list of things to do.
What upsets me a bit is seeing carts full of processed meals and food. That really is all some people live on. I get the whole convenience thing, but I think moderation is good when it comes to processed.
Real food tastes so much better anyway!

That is so funny...your blog made me laugh out loud. I have bought the occasional cake mix I admit but would never claim to have baked from scratch when using one. Being allergic to additives I am force to cook almost everything from scratch and although I hate that I can't buy convenience foods sometimes. It is not always a bad thing. I think the best examples are bread and soup stock. Two things I always use to buy ready made but now can't and wow are they better when made from scratch!
